Swiss Standard German (or Schweizer Hochdeutsch) is one of the four national languages of Switzerland and the written and formal spoken standard used across the German-speaking cantons, which are home to about 63% of the Swiss population. In everyday life speakers use the Alemannic Swiss German dialects (Schwiizerdütsch), while Swiss Standard German is used in writing, education, media and official settings. It differs from the German of Germany mainly in vocabulary (Helvetisms) and pronunciation, and notably replaces the letter ß with ss.
